SONG CONTEST LAUNCHED

In the name of my grandfather Mike Porco- a man who was a champion for aspiring acoustic musical talent for two decades- I am launching a contest where
the winner shall earn studio time and production costs paid for as the prize.

THE MIKE PORCO
SONG INITIATIVE

Rules, of course, shall apply.

Here is a first draft of the rules: (Dated August 7, 2016)
RULE ONE:
Rules are subject to change as well as
the name of the contest

RULE TWO:
Music created will have an identifiable and undeniable POSITIVE sound.
(whatever that means…you know it when you hear it)
The songs created should fit relatively in the FOLK and BLUES sound category
Or genre.
(Not a limiting factor. Not excluding Bluegrass, Rock etc. Keep it real.
Keep it original)

RULE THREE:
Song Lyrics must have UNIFYING theme that can be read aloud, sans music, and
still get the juices flowing

RULE FOUR:
Entrants may be
Bands or Duos only
WHOM HAVE NOT RELEASED OR REFINED
the SONG ENTRY
NOR HAVE A RECORD LABEL TO REPRESENT

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
RULE CHANGE
(September 2016)
ANY musician on Earth willing to enter a song
are eligible

RULE FIVE:
Band or Duo must not suck

Fast Folk

RULE SIX:
Winning Band or Duo will record in New York City
arriving on their own expenses to get there
(some concessions may be made in support of the artist at judge's discretion)
Local bands and acts traveling through
 need apply

RULE SEVEN:
Other rules not yet written or even thunk about must be considered.
Including and not limited to:
Final ownership or recording,
number of units for sale,
type of final product release,
ancillary live performances of winning single

RULE EIGHT:
This song contest is not some low-rent, Wi-Fi song "drop."
We're not just gonna fatten up the Internet.
We're pressing a vinyl record. An actual tangible item.
Two sided by nature.
Length will be determined by money raised.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
The cart is before the horse, admittedly. But where's your sense of excitement?!
The Producer and studio are not even yet sewn up.
In New York, I've got friends downtown.
However, my job is to get the costs covered
by an as-of-yet decided social funding site.
No biggie.
WHY VINYL
Vinyl... because it's gonna sound better.
So the winning entry should
be a wonder to the ears.
Hence the exclusion of solo artists. Extra tracks and instruments of sound
 will sound better.
An electronic/digital (youtube video or otherwise) track may and will be used to promote the ultimate sale of the single/EP/45
A song of UNITY will win.
That is the parameter for subject matter in this contest.
Use your own words and music.
 UNITY or FELLOWSHIP
or something to that effect should be the message.
Don't bother to refer to anyone in this election season.
The song should be timeless.
Won't you feel like a fool when neither of the current candidates win. People are already asking "Bernie who?"
Don't do it. Songs referencing Slovenian wives or serial raping husbands shall be disqualified.
Sammy Walker, Mike Porco
(photo Theodore Lee)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I'll be on the level with you;
the gist is that 'we' record the song(s) and YOU own them and take them with you.
I'll help promote the message and thusly the song.
If the song is worthy, then it will create its own rolling thunder (pun).
If the Band or Duo are bad dressers, difficulty may need to be overcome.

Matching dress….maybe not

In a wild daydream, this may seem like the first pressing of
a budding recording company.
I've truly got too many other things to do such as completing the first documentary
 Perhaps you've heard of the place.

Songs by emerging artists need to be recorded because
record companies today are not willing to break even anymore.
They don't want to just perpetuate business.

They need
to make a KILLING.
They would never want to be accused of starting a
positive movement.
They would never want to be accused of UNIFYING people.
They want money.
NEWSFLASH:
I want money, too.
But cashing in on one Band or Duo's song is,
not only impossible but also, uncouth.

If some Band or Duo or SOLO
ARTIST out there thinks that they can write a song
all by their lonesome and enter it into the CONTEST, have at it.

START YOUR ENGINES!!!!

Rules on submission are simple (I think)
Dropbox or email or Wetransfer or 'whatever'
your entry to Bob Porco at

That simple.

I will reply 'Thank You' upon receipt
and the next email to contestants will be to announce the winner.

WINNER WILL BE ANNOUNCED OCTOBER 23RD
2016.

(Mike Porco's Birthday, doncha know)

One winner. Everyone else comes in second.
Hate to be the first to break the news.

All second place song entries shall be deleted from my possession.
Digital expunge.
Names will be kept on file for merry invites. Reciprocate should you wish.

THE DREAM

The dream ending is that this song leads to
something on the order of
World peace. Not kidding.

Not to make this post any more political than it has to be, I will state that there have  been counterfeit and fraudulent grown-up human beings on the streets attacking other fellow Americans for having opinions of their own.
Some of these brats claim that they are 'activists' or 'inclusive' as they rip other protestors' signs and otherwise force them away.

I've been active at protests. I've done street actions. I do them every year. I'm no professional at it but if any one came over and ripped my sign…well that would be a problem. If I went and grabbed another person's sign, that would start quite a fight. In other words, it's just not done unless the streets are filled with phony humans acting like fucking children.

AS IF we have time to battle each other of the streets of our country…
sheer idiocy and social suicide.

If societal suicide is your thing, then maybe this contest
is not for you and your lone friend. If pissing in your neighbor's yard is
more inviting than pissing in your own,
then maybe this contest is not for you.

It's preferable to have a song and message that
may cause some widespread compassion.

Hindrance of free speech should not be tolerated by any
peacenik.

This song should be worthy to show your momma
and your landlord.
This song should be good enough for me to send to my lovely
12 year old daughter.
This song should swing.

This song will be the first of many
done this way
should the planets stay on course.

CONTEST JUDGE:
Bob Porco, writer of this blog
Folk Music Journalist
Artful Dodger
Instigator

How will I know if the winning song has a Folk quality?
To paraphrase Supreme Justice Frankfurter
and to directly quote Israel G. Young,
''I'll know it when I hear it.''

 I know that music is the way to bring people together.

I know that I have a small, humble platform here on this blog and here on social media and I know that if I did something to promote UNITY
then something good may come of it.

In addition, some ACOUSTIC GROUP OR DUO will get studio time and a product to show for their efforts.

My politics don't matter. The winning musicians' politics don't matter.

In my opinion, Bob Dylan's 'Masters of War' or "Union Sundown" is a song of unity: the artist and the listener join against the folly of war and greed.
Phil Ochs' songs 'There but for fortune' and 'I ain't marching anymore" are songs of freedom.

If I could change one thing about
Music leading the way…as per norm
John Lennon's songs, I would say "Power OF the People" instead of "to" the People. "We can work it out," "All you need is Love..." Yes yes Yes!

The People already have the power to end wars and negotiate prosperity. Music has led the way forever!
From drums of war to the drummer and fife player to the march in Selma to Occupy.

Arlo educated me dearly during our time together by saying:
"That's what the music was doing in the 1960s. That's what it has done and what it will ALWAYS continue to do."

Believe it.

FOLK CITY SHUTS ONE DOOR, OPENS ANOTHER

The year:
1969

The YouTube clip below discusses more….

And without much redundancy, Folk City had to move from W4th Street.
Mike Porco was lucky enough to land an anchor piece of real estate
on 3rd Street by 6th Avenue.

This venue location would go on to witness
the depths and rebirth of the FOLK SCARE
and their recurring offspring.

The highlight at 130 W3rd, of course, without question or doubt, was
Thursday October 23, 1975.
Almost 40 years exactly.
Mike Porco's 61st birthday surprise party.
Bob Dylan returned home 14 years after his
career began at Gerde's.
He used the occasion to kickoff the Rolling Thunder Revue.
None of the videos below discuss the Rolling Thunder…
you're just supposed to know all about it.

What I find surprising is that many of Mike Porco's friends
and even some of the musicians who lived or worked in the Village at the time
do not remember exactly when Folk City moved.
FOLK CITY WAS AN INSTITUTION by then.
I found the Village Voice ads…It re-opened in early November 1969.

There must be a bus of these people following me….)

POSITIVELY PORCO PROMO- Gerde's Folk City Folkumentary

Blogging. I guess some people who dont blog think that bloggers have lots of time to blog their thoughts and blog to their followers. Please note, I don't have many followers on this blog because I'm not a crafty blogger with thousands of followers. I can't "suggest" via Twitter or my own site opinions that get re-tweeted or re-thunk, like some others.

I still believe in the use of this site because I can add to it when I want...and I can add to it remotely. I'm sitting in the smallest room in my house uploading a video in the other room.

....and here it is…..

This video has all I need to say in it. Please have a look. Bring your lunch.

My opinion on my own film Positively Porco, is that it is going to be seen as a real FEEL GOOD movie. I will feel good when I get a production house to make it all work for and with me. I've got the goods. And it's good to give it back to the people eager to see it.

It's the tale of an immigrant making sauce and mixing drinks in a restaurant on 4th Street while, in the same room, American music history was being made.

This is the final push for crowdfunding. Unlike blogging, crowdfunding works. Of course, I'd prefer instead of a dozen "producers" making it possible for me to hire the right people, that only one or a couple of people step forward and say, "Bob, we got a fucking winner here."

Feel free to back this movie. A little or a lot. It will go a long way. And if you are not seeking a bumper sticker or a t-shirt, please share it with those who may be interested. Many thanks!!!!

POSITIVELY PORCO: Folkumentary on Gerde's Folk City

@10:55
I ran into Mike on the street one day he said, 'Johnny! Why you no work for me no more.?" And I said 'I gotta get paid too. You don't pay me enough.'
He was very cheap.
But….he loved the music…He had the best venue,
……what was so phenomenal about gerdes was that a lot of the great blues artists:
Lightnin' Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, Roosevelt Sykes, Jesse Lonecat Fuller, Babe Stoval…played at Gerdes. And they all stayed around the corner at the broadway central hotel……The blues scene in New York was Gerde's folk city. ….where else could you see Roosevelt Sykes??!!

they think ya know something because you've been around long enough and they'd say 'Arlo, what do i have to do to be a musician?'
i would just look at em
i say you want to be a musician?
quit doing everything else
just don't do it
and if you starve to death, you will have starved to death a musician.

cuz I got to play all different kinds of music
and all i had to do was play
and i thought that was wonderful!
what a wonderful gift!
to have musical talent
and
have other individuals ask me to play.

SEEKING SERIOUS EXECUTIVE
All currencies and forms of small budget sized advances accepted. Big market push would equal in kind returns.
Sometimes ya don't know what you have, sometimes you can't give it away.
Word of Positively Porco needs to go around the world because everyone should know how to write their own songs. They should know about Gerde's Folk City and everybody once housed there.

ALL THE FOLK NEWS THAT'S FIT TO PRINT

I NEED PRESS.
Someone write 500 words and get it printed and I will stoop to pay you, ben franklin!
The Village Voice will do. Those raggy tabloids on the subway, too.

One mention of POSITIVELY PORCO in print or internet headline, gets you and your friends one hundred smackeroos.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm not an honest blogger.
I mean, I AM. Whoever you are (and where ever the 330 million readers of my blog are) I definitely tell you what's on my mind and what's going on with the Folkies on the street,
It's just that I'm not there. I'm not even here. I'm not online at all. I'm on a train writing this…or is it the potty? But if I'm there, how can I be here?
I'm emailing myself on a smartphone. Then I cut and paste on the blog and dash.
It's digital masturbation. After the cut and paste, I click "share" to Facecrook or Tweeter and it goes from the train directly to the NSA and 7 billion folk music fans.
And I ask now for little something.
NUMERO UNO: Always, have a gander at my past posts, please. I have a lot of cool pictures here. Enjoy.
BUT also, please "share" with the button in the top right screen or cut and paste the address for this blog in a text or email to a friend or whom ever. (They will want to see this if they like music).
AND lastly,
Please note and please try to make your way to Woodstock Wednesday May 28th at the Woodstock Jewish Congregation. Address is here: wjc
Cantor Bob Cohen, of the New World Singers fame, will be concluding his special lecture series with a get together with ORIGINAL bandmates Happy Traum and Delores Dixon.
This doesn't happen often, I can assure you.
And I'll be giving a free sneak peak of over 20 minutes of my film POSITIVELY PORCO.
11am class. Wednesday morning.
The film is getting done. Come and see the progress in a short video about Izzy, Mike and The Fifth Peg.
Importantly!!! THE NEW WORLD SINGERS will be together again. Today they're considered Folks that helped carve the way forward.
(I still need press! Bad press, good press, don't matter. Write a review. Get it print. I'll pay you for it. How's that? If not I'll do what I always do….ghostwrite)
Thank you!
POSITIVELY PORCO: The Definitive Documentary Film on Gerde's Folk City- OFFICIAL TRAILER release
POSITIVELY PORCO is the definitive documentary film made about New York City's first Folk Music cabaret, GERDE'S FOLK CITY.
Filmed to enlighten even the most staunch Folk Revival enthusiast and historian, POSITIVELY PORCO is the story of Mike Porco and the club a thousand musicians called HOME.
MIKE PORCO, was instrumental in, literally, setting the stage for the music revolution of the '60's.
During Mike Porco’s stewardship (1960-1980) the club hosted early performances by a constellation of Folk and traditional music stars. Many American radio standards and Civil rights anthems were ofttimes heard by the public at Gerde's Folk City for the first time.
A list Folk City's distinctive fraternity of aspiring young artists and legendary recording stars borders on myth.
They were all teenagers and 20-somethings when they got there, and decades later, they're still doing 'what they do'... that is-
PLAY MUSIC.
But not just any kind of music.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mike Porco's legendary claim to fame was that he co-signed 19 year old Bob Dylan's first cabaret card as his legal guardian. In her memoir, A Freewheelin' Time, former Bob Dylan girlfriend Suze Rotolo said that Gerde's was where "the cross-fertilization of different styles and musical eras forged important links in the chain of American musical history." For certain, such a collection of personalities crossing paths under one roof shall never happen again.

Bob Porco, Mike's grandson, undertakes an ardent personal odyssey, seeking out and sitting down with those living treasures that launched a global music paradigm shift from a street corner in Greenwich Village.

It's an inspiring tale of an Italian immigrant- and the musicians around him- who answered their calling to be a part of the 1960’s Folk and Blues Revival together.

The stars themselves tell the astounding history of Gerde's and Positively Mike Porco.

Watch it twice. Be astounded twice!

ARLO GUTHRIE JOINS GERDE'S FOLK CITY DOCUMENTARY

Today, somewhere in Massachusetts, it rained. A lot. The rain could be heard pounding on the roof but no one was listening. Arlo was holding court. His house was the latest site for the traveling 'Gerde's Folk City documentary road show.' I've been meeting with so many fabulous people and they have all had great memories of my grandfather Mike Porco and his cabaret. Arlo played there in 1961 when he was just 13 years old. It was his first appearance on stage EVER. Arlo has developed as a musician quite a bit since. He generously shared some rules for living given to him by the council of his years.  The rain couldn't penetrate the fun time had at Arlo's.
